This tool will break apart your pattern piece, then while its selected right click and UNGROUP. Then with the white arrow, AKA "Direct Selection Tool", delete the lines/points you don't need. You may find yourself wondering ... WHY DID I JUST TRACE THE PATTERN IF I'M GOING TO DELETE THE LINES?
